Spoilers:Stargate Atlantis--mostly all of seasons one and two, but I've rearranged events and people to suit the needs of the narrative. There's a small spoiler for season three in the notes below, but it's hidden!
The story is a fusion of the movie "Lawrence of Arabia" and to a lesser extent the original texts of T.E. Lawrence, "The Seven Pillars of Wisdom" and its abridgement "Revolt in the Desert", and a wildly AU Stargate Atlantis universe.
It will not matter if you're not familiar with the movie, this story is designed to stand on its own. Also, if you haven't seen the movie, it is at its heart a tragedy, and so this is the warning for major character death. I hate to put this warning on stories, but if I don't there will be major flak. I've ripped the bandaid off rather quickly, though the reader is, of course, the final arbiter in those matters.
This story is rife with fannish shout-outs, it's my way of paying homage to all of the fabulous writers in SG:A. The title is a direct quote from the movie.
Any comments or criticisms are welcomed, even dissenting opinions.
Credits:Thanks to gateworld.com for transcripts, etc. Thank you's are also due to betagoddess, kittyfisher, bulleteyes and vagablonde for allowing me to ping ideas and general blathering. Special love to threnodyjones for giving me her excellent advice, opinions and encouragement. Extra special love to candygramme for going above and beyond to read and edit countless versions, and providing support and suggestions--and she doesn't even watch Stargate Atlantis. How awesome is she? {g} Any and all errors are my own, as I continued to futz with it after she was finished.
Dedication:For my mom, who instilled in me a life-long love & passion for 'Lawrence of Arabia' and T. E. Lawrence. Thanks, Mom—I wish you could read it.
Disclaimer:'Lawrence of Arabia' the film belongs to Horizon Pictures (II) and Columbia Pictures; 'Stargate Atlantis' belongs to Sony Pictures Television, MGM Television and The Sci-Fi Channel. The story is a product of my imagination, and is for entertainment only; no profit, other than enjoyment, has been gained from this fiction.
Miscellaneous:For those that care about such things, I used a vague set of associations in characterization:
John Sheppard=El Aurence
Teyla=combination of Sherif Ali/Prince Feisal
Cowen=Auda abu Tayi
Wraith=Turkish Empire
Weir=Dryden
Lorne=Brighton
Sumner=General Murray
Caldwell=Allenby
Highlight below for further notes and that season three spoiler:
O'Neill is just himself. I honestly had avoided all spoilers until today, but it was an accident and an ugly, rude awakening. I truly had no idea, and his appearance might be misconstrued. I'll chalk it up to the fact that great minds think alike.
